AMSE 'On Track' in Biggest Project to Date

AMSE has erected 1000 tonnes of steel in the last month in what is the company’s biggest project to date.

The €50m (£33.5m) Abbeylands shopping complex in Ferrybank, Co. Waterford, is set to transform a 7-acre site into one of the premier shopping attractions in the region.

Operations Director at AMSE, Brian Looney, explained the fast-track nature of the scheme,

“We were appointed as steel contractors to the project in February and quickly produced a procurement model to allow all materials (7000 tonnes) to be ordered by 17th March. Our technicians then began detail modelling to allow fabrication to start as soon as possible. Once the scheme received fast-track approval, we began working in close co-ordination with the design team (Michael Punch and Partners/Opperman Architects) to optimise the design detailing interface.”

AMSE is now the largest independent steel fabricator in Ireland with an impressive portfolio of over 1200 projects, including Croke Park Stadium, the new Theatre Royal in Wexford, and the new Grand Canal Square Hotel in Dublin.

In terms of tonnage, however, this project represents the largest that AMSE has undertaken to date.

“We are now utilising 5 of our 10 site crews on this project and the steel is going up very quickly to meet the accelerated programme. We began erecting on the 9th May and have 50% of the steel up already. This keeps us two weeks ahead of schedule, and on track to meet our completion date in November ” Looney explained.

The Developer on the project, Deerland Construction Ltd, whose Managing Director is Kilkenny man Dermot McPhilips, has already developed shopping centres in Kilkenny, Mullingar and Dundalk. John Paul Construction has been appointed as main contractor on the project.
